When it was revealed that Ian Gillan was rejoining DEEP PURPLE once again, fans and media alike were hardly enthusiastic. Gillan's comeback album, "The Battle Rages On", was generally regarded as another lackluster effort, although the world tour showed the band still capable of pulling large audiences. The songs, built out of Ritchie Blackmore's guitar riffs complemented by Jon Lord's keyboards, were shorter and had quicker tempos than much heavy metal, making for a sound that was sometimes closer to DEF LEPPARD than DEEP PURPLE. The lyrics were the usual mishmash of sex and violence clichés.
Although few songs (like 'The Battle Rages On' and 'Anya') were among the best numbers written by the band since "Perfect Strangers", the album barely made the charts, which only confirmed that, after the initial hoopla about the reunion subsided, there wasn't much of an ongoing market for new DEEP PURPLE music - even if it sounded like old Purple - which may be why Gillan and Blackmore left the group again after this release. |
